Consulting Medical Herbalist, seeing people on an appointment basis in a private practice. This website is about me and my practice.
I qualified as a herbalist, with a four year degree-level qualification, in 1991 and I am member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists
(click here). My previous career was in nursing and health visiting and these previous skills have been invaluable in my work as a herbalist. My approach to the professional practice of herbal medicine is practical, thorough and respectful. Helping people to improve their health through herbal medicine prescibed for the individual, along with supporting advice, is both effective and rewarding.
I am also fully trained in
Therapeutic Massage and
Manual Lymphatic Drainage.
I work in Blackburn in a natural therapy practice within easy reach of Accrington, Darwen, Preston, Clitheroe, Burnley and Rossendale.
Over the years I have helped people who have had a very wide range of conditions. There is no limit to who could benefit from herbal medicine. To use herbs effectively it is essential to know the person's unique constitution as well as the specific nature of the complaint(s).
Digestive complaints including
indigestion, stomach and duodenal ulcer, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhoea, diverticulitis, gallstones, piles are very commonly treated.
Lung tonics and herbs to counter infection and soothe irritated tissues are useful for
asthma, bronchitis, hay fever, flu, tonsillitis, sinusitis.
Skin conditions such as
acne, eczema, psoriasis and
skin infections need a broad approach including purifying and healing medicines.
Angina, arteriosclerosis, palpitations, varicose veins and
poor circulation are just some of the conditions affecting the circulatory system which can be helped.
Anxiety, emotional problems, stress, tension, poor sleep, depression, headache, migraine, tiredness are all commonly seen. Tonics, relaxants and nervines - herbs which strengthen the nervous system - are appropriate.
Specific urinary herbs treat
cystitis, kidney problems, prostatitis, enlarged prostate and other conditions affecting the urinary tract.
Period pain, premenstrual syndrome, menstrual and menopausal problems, endometriosis, fertility problems can be safely treated with astringents, antispasmodics and nourishing 'female' plants. I'm also happy to offer support during
pregnancy.
All kinds of
joint and
muscle pain, gout, strains, sprains and injuries can respond very well.
Cleansers, purifiers and cooling herbs treat
infections of many kinds. Immune tonics support immune function and build good defences, so lessening the need for antibiotic drugs.
Allergies can often be eased too.
Herbal medicine does well in feelings of
illness when no medical cause can be found. The balancing, restorative nature of herbs comes into its own here, as it does in preventing illness.
These medicines also support
well-being in terminal illness.
